Game Designs

Contrast 2008 (12-13 September 2008)

MooPoot

CONTRAST WINNER: Most Entertaining Game

Role: Designer/QA

Contrast is a 24hour Game Design Competition.

The game had to address 2 themes: 'the environment', and 'big and small.'

Moopoot addresses those themes by showing the underlying Ozone Layer issue through casual game play. The Ozone cannot be regenerated, this is reflected in the game as there is no winning condition due to infinite play. The theme of big and small is shown in the Cows and City, as well as the underlying implication that the Ozone problem is only growing bigger over time as the Ozone gets smaller.

Moopoot was developed using GameMaker, Gimp, Paint.net, 24 hours and lots of Redbull.

I worked in a team of 5: 2 programmers, 2 artists and myself. 80% of us were from the Picopoke development team.

I was also in charge of audio for this project.

Responsibilities as Designer/QA:

-Writing the Game Design Document.
-Paper Prototyping.
-Creating/Finding Audio Assets.
-Technical Testing and Freeplay to balance game play.
-Collating data from informal external testing.
-Organization of final assets and build.

We were given 8 weeks to complete this project in a team of 7. The game was developed using SCRUM Methodology.

Picopoke's beta release is live on Facebook:

National University of Singapore: Game Design (August 2007-November 2007)

Breath Taking

Role: Content and Assets

I worked in a group of 4 for this project. Over the course of around 6 weeks, we were tasked with designing, prototyping, playtesting, creating and finally presenting a computer game.

The game was made with Gamemaker. The focus of study was to introduce the design process of creating games rather than develop technical skills.

The graphics for the game are all 2D and made in Adobe Photoshop 7.0.

Responsibilities as Content and Assets:

-Created asset and UI graphics for gameplay.
-Sourced for non-copyrighted sound effects and background music for the game.
-Designed visual aspects of the game: made sure the metaphor of the game fit with the game design.
-Created the promotional poster and actual CD product of the game.

  • Written Work

    (March 2008-Present)

This is my most recent personal work.

The chapters are in order...although they are not complete or edited yet.

The inspiration for this particular story comes from my own personal experiences in what I call my 'first' marriage.

At the point of time when I just entered university, I was juggling 2 MMORPGs (and I to let my first one go.)

I play with real life friends so leaving the community was hardest for me and since the game was focused very much on end-game PVP (player-vs-player) that led to real life social bonds that were really strong... to the point all of us still keep in contact and try new games together...etc.

The inspiration came mostly from my feelings about leaving that community...

    (January 2001-2002)

These 2 pages are parts of a story I have been writing since secondary school.

This particular story is more fantasy-medieval themed.

I didn't write them in order. There are a couple more parts in hardcopy in a book somewhere (which I can't seem to find at the moment =X) but these are the ones I managed to find in my harddrive.

I don't think I'll ever finish this story as, to be honest, I raid in World of Warcraft and it's been my main hobby for a long time now. Also, this was written in a time when I was more naive and willing to believe in happily ever afters...

They were written in my Pre-LOTR days when I particularly liked that genre during to several Tamora Pierce series.
